WHA T DIVERSITY?rnThis past semester Accuracy in Academia’s John M. Olin Conference Series traveled to Columbia University and asked if conservativernideas were still welcome in higher education. The answer they received from Columbia President George Rupp was an emphaticrn”NO!” Rupp dispatched a team of security guards to keep students interested in conservatism from meeting on campus. The gatheringrnwas forced to reconvene off-campus in a park, where a mob of activists shouted down speaker Dinesh D’Souza.rnSoviet mouthpiece Angela Davis, professional bigot Khalid Muhammed, and human bull’s-eye Salman Rushdie all have spokenrnrecently at Columbia without “safety concerns'” overriding their right to speak. Yet a group of students interested in conservative ideasrnis deemed a “security threat.” Quite clearly, there are different rules when “politically incorrect” speakers come to campus.rnWhether it’s a dean of students at Cornell participating in a public burning of a conservativernnewspaper or a speech code at Brown designed to suppress thought that challenges the liberalrnestablishment, administrators at our top schools are putting students on notice that supportrnfor “diversity” should not extend to the intellectual realm.rnAre conservative ideas so powerful that they must be banned lest students become seduced?rnThat’s the message George Rupp and other bureaucrats are sending. While administratorsrnare quite comfortable eradicating a diversity of thought, they shamelessly promote thernmost intellectually vacuous material under the banner of “diversity.”rn* Princeton’s Center for Human Values recently hired Peter Singer, a professor who condonesrnparents killing their newborns. He teaches, “It is speciesist to judge that the life of a Activists call to silence Accuracy in Acadenormalrnadult member of our species is more valuable than the life of a normal adult mouse.” mia; Columbia enthusiastically complies.rn* Cornell offers “The Sexual Child,” a class requiring pro-pedophilia readings and the viewing of pictures of naked children. Arntypical assignment complains, “boy lovers are so stigmatized that it is difficult to find defenders for their civil liberties, let alonernerotic orientation.” Opposing “cross-generational encounters,” students learn, has “more in common with ideologies of racismrnthan with true ethics.”rn* While the military’s ROTC program is labeled unfit to meet in Yale lecture halls, the school’s classrooms have been the site ofrnsuch courses as “Drag Queens, Transsexuals, and Queers: Anthropological Approaches” and “Feminist and Queer Theory.”rnStudents at Columbia had to stand outside in a cold park to hear ideas that challenge the campus establishment.
