Authorized and Unauthorized Riots

As we braced for the sixth day of turmoil in the City of the Angels, it dawned on me that what we’re observing is an authorized riot.

In fact, according to Jessica Tarlov, whose commentary one can hear on the Fox News program “The Five,” this riot is nothing more significant than a peaceful demonstration that turned unruly because Trump had the audacity to send in the National Guard. This mess, I’ve learned, started out as a justified expression of anger and disappointment against Trump’s bullying of the innocent. Until the National Guard escalated the situation, idealistic youth were merely acting out their frustration at how ICE is picking on the foreign-born.

Naturally, Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass restrained the local police from treating these demonstrators in an unduly violent fashion, a prospective violence that the bejeweled Tarlov in her designer’s dress lamented quite loudly. Apparently, Trump had no sense of proportion when he decided out of some impulse, or because, according to Jimmy Kimmel, he’s “mentally ill,” to worsen an avoidable confrontation. Anyhow, according to Tarlov, what is now going on in LA is far less riotous than the disturbances during the Summer of Love, although those too, it seems, have been maliciously overblown.

According to my understanding of what the media are telling me, the raging riots in LA, and possibly the ones that occurred during the supposed reaction to the killing of George Floyd were or are authorized riots. That is, they are outbursts of destructive energy that the left and the Democratic Party welcome and even finance, and which their media handmaidens defend.

To be sure, there are other, far more reprehensible riots, which are always the ones that involve the right. Although these outbursts are few and far between, when they occur, they are unauthorized and must be ruthlessly repressed. Otherwise, we’ll be forced to deal with a fascist threat to our democracy. The events of Jan. 6, 2021, which witnessed the temporary occupation of the Capitol Building by Trump supporters, did not constitute the good type of riot. Unlike those half naked people waving Mexican flags on top of burning cars in LA, the unauthorized rioters of Jan. 6 were not idealistic—that is, they were not acting on behalf of admirable things like open borders, expanding LGBTQ rights and DEI, or increasing payments to leftist NGOs.

The tumult of Jan. 6 was not even a riot subsidized by the Soros family, Democratic operatives, or Democratic-funded institutes. In short, we’re speaking here about a riot that should not have taken place and whose participants and sympathizers deserved to rot in jails. In authorized riots the peaceful demonstrators should be allowed to come after meddlesome policemen and obtrusive shopkeepers of all races. In unauthorized riots, such as the one that took place on Jan. 6, the police who shoot demonstrators like Ashli Babbitt must be defended or even celebrated.

It was also appropriate, or so the legacy media assure me, to empower an extended congressional investigation committee run by the Democrats to hand out subpoenas to their political opponents. This was needed to expose those who were planning an “insurrection’ against democracy” on Jan. 6. How else could the champions of democracy punish those engaged in carrying out an unauthorized riot? Los Angeles’s Democratic congressman, Rep. Maxine Waters, is being ideologically or morally consistent when she describes Trump supporters as “domestic terrorists,” unlike those who are now rioting in her district in support of criminal illegals.

Furthermore, there are authorized assailants who participate in these authorized riots, which the media depict as justified, peaceful demonstrations. Those who attack policemen or ICE agents are not really being violent. They are only expressing their just anger at a system that tolerates racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia. If the protestors burn down buildings and engage in killing, we are urged to view those losses as collateral damage.

In any case, the responsibility for such actions rests with Trump, his domestic terrorists, and the rampant bigotry that anti-democrats in this country are causing, for example when they treat as a criminal that “Maryland father” whom Trump and ICE persist in misrepresenting as a gangster. Presumably if Kilmar Abrego Garcia were to knock off a few ICE agents, we would only have our deranged, neo-Nazi head of state and his goons to blame for the actions of this authorized agent of justice.

By now, I hope I have explained what some continue to mistake for a double standard. Such a standard arguably does not exist because some riots are authorized ones, which are not riots at all but peaceful demonstrations against discrimination and injustice. Other violent protests, which are not heavily financed by Democratic operatives and woke plutocrats and which the media don’t sanction, are clearly not approved ones and should therefore be ruthlessly repressed. This may help us understand what CNN’s Omar Jimenez meant when standing before a burning building in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August 2020, where he proclaimed the havoc being wrought by the left as a “mostly peaceful” demonstration. Jimenez was just telling us that an authorized riot was unfolding.
