Whenever a presidential transition occurs, the outgoing chief executive can usually point to at least one of his policies on any issue that had some modicum of success. In the case of Joe Biden and immigration, however, it has been nonstop failure since day one. To make things even worse, it seems that the mayhem was by design.
Now, after a failed election-year gimmick to briefly tighten the borders and fool the public into believing all was well, the Biden administration is revealing its true self by selling off what remains of unused border wall materials that have been sitting unused since 2021. In some ways it is a fitting tribute to Biden’s complete negligence of the nation’s border security. This move comes from an outgoing president who recently swore on camera to provide cooperation in the transfer of power to Donald Trump.
“Joe Biden keeps talking about a smooth transition and unified government, and yet he races to sell desperately needed border wall for pennies on the dollar,” the president-elect wrote on Truth Social. “It will cost the U.S. a fortune, and time, to get the exact same wall to replace what has been sold, and the new wall will cost triple the price. It is CRAZY, and must be stopped.”
Why does this matter? One of Biden’s first actions upon entering the Oval Office on Inauguration Day in January 2021 was to issue a proclamation that halted construction of the wall along the southern border, a project Biden deemed “not a serious policy solution” and “a waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.”
Since that day, illegal border crossings have exploded, as have the numbers of migrant deaths along the Rio Grande, illicit drugs transported into the U.S., and children trafficked by cartels. Meanwhile, news reports showed vast fields of steel wall sections rusting in the sun, each section costing about $5,000 and already purchased with taxpayer dollars via an act of Congress. It has been estimated that about $150 million worth of materials are sitting idle in south Texas, and now being offered for sale on a government auction site.
Biden might have some credibility in labeling a border wall an unserious policy solution if his own alternative policies had been a resounding success. Instead, they have been an epic calamity—responsible for the deaths of hundreds of migrants and allowing suspected terrorists into the homeland, all while creating a pipeline for deadly fentanyl and other drugs to poison Americans throughout the country.
As justification for this madness, illegal immigration activists can only cite, without evidence, the bumper sticker slogan that “walls don’t work.” This flies in the face of reports from other countries like Israel that have had great success with physical barriers in keeping terrorists and other national security threats from entering.
As if to prove that walls don’t work, the Border Patrol last year welded open 114 border wall gates in Arizona. The inexplicable move resulted in swarms of migrants walking freely into the United States. Yes, in some cases walls don’t work, like when their gates are intentionally opened for anyone to enter.
These actions are rich coming from a president who loudly proclaimed for the last four years that Trump was a “threat to democracy.” We saw democracy in action on Nov. 5, and a majority of American voters made it clear that they want a reversal of the current border policies and a return to national sovereignty. Selling off wall materials that the public voted to be used for border security is about as undemocratic as it gets.
It is bad enough that this administration killed the project to complete a border wall system that the government had already bought and paid for. Now, rather than admit its mistake for the immigration policies that are tearing the country apart, it sells off the wall materials, making a return to border security that much more difficult. That is not leadership, it’s sabotage.
From the beginning of his campaign for president in 2019, Joe Biden wedded himself to the most radical elements of the anti-borders movement. Some of them ended up working in his administration. That unholy alliance guaranteed that the Biden years would be about tearing down, not enhancing, the sort of border security that would make the American people safe.
No, Joe Biden will not have his faced etched onto Mount Rushmore, as Nancy Pelosi once preposterously suggested. Instead, his presidency will forever be associated with a border invasion, innocent lives lost, and putting partisanship before leadership. Selling off the border wall materials just cemented that legacy.
