The revolt against the Establishment continues. The three leading contenders for the Republican nomination for president – Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina – never have held political office.
Now House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been pushed out for a lack of accomplishment. Consider:
In 2010, Republicans stormed back into majority status in the House on the enthusiasm of the Tea Party, whose top priority was repealing Obamacare. Boehner was supposed to lead the charge. He didn’t.
In 2012, even thought President Obama was re-elected on a platform touting Obamacare, that was counterbalanced by Republicans keeping the House on promises of repealing Obamacare. Again, Boehner was supposed to lead the charge. He didn’t.
In 2014, voters kept the GOP running the House, then added to that GOP control of the Senate. By then, Obamacare – officially the Affordable Care Act – was gutting the middle class with sky-high premium increases and eviscerated coverage. Voters were clear: Get rid of Obamacare! Boehner again did nothing.
That’s just one example of misrule. The threat of “shutting down government” always was trotted out as an excuse for the do-nothing Republican Congress. Somehow doing so was supposed to taint the GOP’s image with voters – even though voters clearly wanted not only to repeal Obamacare, but to end Planned Parenthood funding to stop it from selling live baby parts, among other actions.
And I’m sure Chronicles readers know “shutting down the government” – happy thought! – really doesn’t happen; rather, only “non-essential services,” about 13 percent of the total, is closed down. And even then, the government workers later get their pay back for those lost days – a dream benefit in the private sector that pays for it all. And why are “non-essential services” kept around, instead of being canceled permanently to save taxpayers money?
As of this writing, it looks like California Rep. Kevin McCarthy will take Boehner’s place and is more amenable to conservatives. The test is simple: Will he cancel Obamacare and end all Planned Parenthood funding?
