Americans have traditionally celebrated the Fourth of July with parades, cookouts, and fireworks. We would gather with friends and family to celebrate the birth of our nation and perhaps even take a moment of thanksgiving to appreciate that we live in the greatest nation the world has ever seen. Sadly, every year now it seems that the left celebrates our nation’s birthday with increasingly vitriolic bashing of the country and its founding fathers.
On Independence Day last month, Representative Cori Bush (D-MO) tweeted, “When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free.” She also tweeted, “The Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn’t recognize Black people as human. Today is a great day to demand Reparations Now.”
In The Washington Times, Valerie Richardson wrote that “Ms. Bush’s statement that the Declaration didn’t recognize Black people as human is false—it does not mention Black people or slavery at all, nor does it say some people are human and others not.”
“At the time of the Declaration, there were free Blacks in every one of the then-colonies, even those where slavery was widespread,” Richardson added.
Ms. Bush wasn’t alone in her Independence Day bashing. She was joined by fellow squad member Jamaal Bowman (D-NY). “This July 4th, we must remember that we stand on stolen land toiled by enslaved Africans and recommit ourselves to the fight for freedom, equality, & justice so that these ideals are accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few,” Bowman tweeted. “We are not free until everyone is truly free.”
The ranting of Ms. Bush and Mr. Brown could easily be ignored as the bloviating of two out-of-touch extremists. Mr. Brown has called to cancel student debt, provide free public college, and an end to legacy admissions at universities. Ms. Bush recently introduced a bill to Congress calling for $14 trillion in slavery reparations. Extremism, unfortunately, has become a common currency among many Democrats.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters, not to be outdone by her younger peers, tweeted, “July 4th… & so, the Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal. Equal to what? What men? Only white men? Isn’t it something that they wrote this in 1776 when African Americans were enslaved? They weren’t thinking about us then, but we’re thinking about us now!”
But politicians are not the only ones who make it a point to ritualistically denigrate Independence Day now. The left’s favorite ice cream makers, Ben and Jerry’s, threw its hat into the ring, too. “This 4th of July, it’s high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it. Learn more and take action now,” the company wrote on Twitter. Ironically, the tweet was hit with an amusing note for added context that reads: “Despite Ben and Jerry’s supposed commitment to returning land they feel was stolen, they have yet to reach out to the tribe whose land their HQ is on, and arrange a return of the land to them.”
So what are we to do? Is every person of European descent living in the US going to be repatriated to Europe? Ben and Jerry’s won’t even return the “stolen land” on which their base of operations stands.
Still, given the anti-American vitriol of the left, a recent poll by Gallup showing that people who are proud to be an American is at near record lows and fewer than one-in-three Democrats are extremely proud to be Americans comes as no surprise. Per Gallup, “party identification remains the greatest demographic differentiator in expressions on national pride, and Republicans have been consistently more likely than Democrats and Independents to express pride in being American. 60% of Republicans and 29% of Democrats expressed extreme pride in being American. Independents’ current 33% extreme pride is their lowest on record by one percentage point.”
These numbers are easily seen in real life. Compare a Trump rally to any almost any public speech given by a Democrat. One includes flag-waving people chanting USA, while the other simply talks about how terrible it is to live in this country.
Regardless of your political view, we should all be able to agree that the United States—warts and all—is a great nation. That being said, it is hard to see the left putting aside its hatred for the country that has given them the very freedom to express their anti-Americanism, even on America’s birthday.
