Ever wonder why these millions of migrants who have crossed our southern border during the last several years seem so well-fed and well-clothed? Many are chubby, especially the women. They are often holding cute, fat babies. “Food insecurity” seems to be the least of their problems.  Men typically carry backpacks stuffed with water bottles, foodstuffs, and clothes. They don’t look bedraggled and hungry, let alone exhausted and starving. For people trekking 2,000 miles or more to the United States, they show few signs of fleeing abject poverty.

If you want to see images that comport with real hunger and poverty, look at Dorothea Lange’s 1930s photographs of the Okies and others fleeing the Dust Bowl and arriving in California. No chubby people there. Skin and bone. Barefoot children. Threadbare clothing.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Mexico and some in Central America, beginning with a family trip in the early 1950s. I’ve traversed thousands of miles of territory south of the border and flown over even more, some while piloting planes, including flying a mission in the 1970s for Doctors Without Borders to a remote village in Baja. I can tell you unequivocally that very few people in those areas have the resources to move a hundred miles, let alone a thousand or more.

So, again I ask, how can millions be coming north from Mexico and Central America, even from South America and beyond, and upon reaching our border look none the worse for the wear? 

Decades ago, this would have been impossible. Today, though, thanks to the United Nations and associated nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the migrants are supported from the beginning of their journey to their end at our southern border. If this isn’t bad enough, since the United States is the UN’s largest donor, American money from the good, old American taxpayer pays for the invasion.

I recently pored over the UN’s 2024 update to its Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan (RMRP), a 131-page beast of redundancy, to find varying numbers of anticipated migrants and amounts of money needed to assist them properly. The report’s focus on South American countries, particularly Venezuela, surprised me most. Not that there won’t be tens of thousands of migrants still coming from Mexico and Central America, but there will be hundreds of thousands arriving from Venezuela alone and hundreds of thousands more from other South American countries. The total number of migrants from all sources coming our way during 2024 is projected to be nearly 3 million, although the report suggests some will settle in other countries on the way here.   

According to the report, they will be aided at stations along established routes, not only by the UN but also by associated NGOs, which have increased during the last two years to 248 from 228. Aid to migrants comes not only in the form of basics such as food, water, clothing, shoes, security, and shelter but also in cash (presumably in Yankee dollars), rechargeable debit cards, vouchers, and money transfers. The Okies should have been so lucky.

This is going to require some big bucks. The report puts the total at “1.59 billion USD to carry out over 14,000 activities with refugees and migrants and host communities in 17 countries.” Most Americans have driven by a bridge being built or a highway being widened with a large sign at the site reading, “Your taxpayer dollars at work.” The migrants should be carrying similar signs. In small print, though, and stated in Spanish should also be, “Gringo stooges—we will replace you.”

America has simply become suicidal. In addition to the UN and the NGOs, there will now be “Safe Mobility Offices” operated by the United States in some of the migrants’ origin countries to facilitate the northward march to our borders. The report says their purpose is to “have a positive and stabilizing impact on refugees and migrants who qualify by providing them with options for a regular pathway to the USA.” These mobility offices have already been established in Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.

Not even the debauched and degenerate fifth-century Romans provided mobility offices to migrants like the Visigoths in their march on Rome. But we have Joe Biden. He launched the Safe Mobility Initiative in the spring of 2023, and the first mobility offices were built that summer. More are on the way.  The State Department says this is “the largest expansion in decades of lawful pathways to the United States to help refugees, vulnerable migrants, and other forcibly displaced persons in the Western Hemisphere.”

Everyone’s favorite Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, declared, “These are places where we feel a humanitarian, as well as the security imperative, to meet people where they are, to cut smugglers out, and to provide them with a safe and orderly way to arrive in the United States if they qualify for relief.”

Qualifying for relief is not difficult. By December, 10,000 migrants had already been referred by the mobility offices to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program for resettlement. The U.S. expects to process at least 50,000 more this year.

While the UN and the Biden administration are doing everything they can to move migrants from Latin America into the United States, their efforts are rivaled by church groups. It’s an ecumenical effort with Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish groups well represented. Among the many dozens of groups are Lutheran World Relief, United Methodist Committee on Relief, Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Baptist River Ministry, Catholic Charities, Kino Border Initiative, Humanitarian Respite Center, Border Angels, American Jewish World Service, and Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS).

I was surprised to learn that these groups are often partly funded by U.S. government grants—the good old American taxpayer once again. Todd Bensman at the Center for Immigration Studies reports that in fiscal year 2022, HIAS received 47 percent of its funding from government grants, most of them from the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security.

President Biden and those who control the Democratic Party want the migrant flow to continue precisely because it reduces the white proportion of the U.S. population and increases the future number of Democratic voters. That America may be changed irretrievably matters not to them. That they will gain political power and be able to “transform” America means everything. I’ve seen this happen to my own California, which was some 85 percent non-Hispanic white when I was growing up and is now 36 percent—and declining. 

From 1943 until 1959, Republicans held the California governorship. They lost the election in 1958 only because of a bruising Republican primary battle between conservatives and moderates. Then, amid the hippie-dippy era in California, Ronald Reagan won the gubernatorial election in November 1966 and again in 1970. For eight years through San Francisco’s Summer of Love, UC Berkeley demonstrations, anti-war protests, riots, rampant drug use, and hippie communes, California voted to make Reagan governor, not once but twice. 

When Californians first made Reagan governor, they also made Republican and Marine veteran Robert Finch lieutenant governor, Republican Ivy Baker Priest state treasurer, and Republican Houston Flournoy state controller. The incumbent Republican secretary of state, Frank M. Jordan, was reelected, as was the incumbent superintendent of public instruction, the “ultra-conservative” Republican Max Rafferty. At the same time, both U.S. Senators from California were Republicans, Thomas Kuchel and George Murphy, the latter a Hollywood actor and dancer and a close friend of Reagan. The only statewide elected office not manned by a Republican was attorney general, which was held by the popular tough-on-crime Democrat Thomas Lynch. Today, no Republican, whether conservative, moderate, or RINO, holds a statewide office in California.

Once the bastion of California conservatism, Orange County has been transformed dramatically. In the 1950 U.S. Census, Orange County was 92 percent native-born whites and 7 percent foreign-born whites. However, the census back then counted Mexican-Americans as white and not separately as Hispanic. Nonetheless, there were few Mexican-Americans in Orange County then, and the population was probably nearly 95 percent non-Hispanic white. Today, Orange County is but 49 percent non-Hispanic white and 30 percent foreign-born, nearly all nonwhite. The once “ultra-conservative” Republican Orange County now votes Democrat. Trump won only 42 percent of the Orange County vote in 2016 and 44 percent in 2020. This, in a county that in 1964 chose the conservative Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, labeled an “extremist” by the media, over Democrat Lyndon Johnson by 56 percent to 44 percent, while the United States as a whole voted for Johnson 61 percent to 38 percent. If Orange County, California, can be transformed by immigration, so can any county in America.

It seems impossible to deny that today’s version of the Democratic Party is anything other than wholly committed to transforming historic America by inviting in Third World migrants by the millions. It’s also clear that the UN is the largest funder of migration to our southern border and that the largest source of UN funding comes from the U.S. 

Isn’t it about time we sharply reduced the transfer of American taxpayer dollars into UN coffers? Better yet, isn’t about time the U.S. got out of the UN and the UN got out of the U.S. before America’s sovereignty is reduced any further? I can’t see what we Americans gain by being a member of the UN, especially now that we are suffering the effects of the UN’s migrant policies.

At this writing, Texas governor Greg Abbott is making a stand, which reminds me of another Texas leader, William Barret Travis, who in 1836 called out from the Alamo in a letter, “To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World:”

…I call on you in the name of liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch. The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily…. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country. Victory or Death.  ◆
