Eileen Wang, the now-former mayor of Arcadia, California, has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges of acting as an unregistered agent for the People’s Republic of China. This is certainly disturbing, but the PRC’s unregistered agent has grounds to believe she is being singled out.
After all, other California Democrats got away with their connections to the PRC for years. True, Rep. Eric Swalwell was recently ejected from the California governor’s race and then resigned from Congress, but he had been exposed all the way back in 2020 as a consort of the Chinese agent Fang Fang, (cleverly and more accurately labeled “PoonFang” by the late Rush Limbaugh). Moreover, one suspects the more recent allegations of rape and sexual assault had more to do with his downfall than his previous escapades.
Nancy Pelosi—who hailed her favorite Stalinist, Harry Bridges, as a hero of American labor—was unmoved by the Fang Fang revelations, and kept Swalwell on the House Intelligence Committee, which doubtless pleased the PRC to no end.
Wang might also recall the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. In 2020, Missouri’s Eric Schmitt, then attorney general, now senator, filed a lawsuit charging that Chinese officials were “responsible for the enormous death, suffering, and economic losses they inflicted on the world.” Feinstein called the lawsuit “a huge mistake” and “very, very dangerous.” As the former San Francisco mayor explained, China “has pulled tens of millions of people out of poverty in a short period of time. And as a country growing into a respectable nation among other nations. And I deeply believe that.” Which was true, she did believe it.
Feinstein believed in China so deeply that she let the PRC maintain a Chinese spy on her staff for 20 years, and he was much more than her “driver.” As the San Francisco Chronicle noted, the spy even attended Chinese consulate functions for the senator, who served on committees whose work would be of great interest to the PRC. As a story at the Federalist pointed out at the time that story broke, Feinstein’s husband profited handsomely from the trade with China that the senator supported, but there were no official investigations, hearings, or charges of any kind against the San Francisco Democrat. Delaware Democrat Joe Biden might also merit Wang’s attention.
While he was vice president, Biden was tapped to lead China policy in the Obama administration. Biden “got China” through the auspices of Tom Donilon, a Democrat activist going back to Walter Mondale and a disastrous national security advisor who believed there was only “potential competition” between the Communist regime and the United States. As it turned out, however, it was China that “got Biden.” According to Biden, the Chinese were “not bad folks” and not even “competition” for the USA. So, it was no surprise that when he became president, Biden’s Justice Department and FBI proved very friendly to Chinese spies whenever they landed in court.
“The Justice Department is ending a controversial program, launched under the Trump administration, to hunt down Chinese spies,” CBS News reported in February 2022.
President Trump’s “China Initiative” targeted China’s theft of trade secrets and intellectual property. In 2020, federal officials charged that Chinese national Tang Juan lied about ties to the Chinese military in order to gain access to the University of California at Davis. In July 2021, federal prosecutors suddenly dropped the charges against Tang Juan and five Chinese nationals. The Justice Department did not reveal any exculpatory information in Tang’s case, or any mistakes by the FBI in tying her to China’s military.
In 2023, Biden had no problem with a massive Chinese surveillance balloon crossing the country and spying on strategic military bases. According to Biden’s generals, the Chinese collected no intel on the mission. In Conrad Black’s memorable phrase, Joe Biden was best described as “a waxworks effigy of a president.”
Now California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to be president, and Eileen Wang might wonder about the coiffed one, with strong ties to the Brown, Pelosi and Getty families.
When it was discovered in 2024 that there was an illegal Chinese biolab in Reedley, California, jammed with potential pathogens and a refrigerator labeled “Ebola” Newsom appeared to have no problem with it. As Wang should know, there’s more to the story. In Fool’s Gold: The Radicals and Traitors Who Killed the California Dream and Now Threaten Us All, Susan Crabtree and Jedd McFatter make a strong case that Newsom has integrated Chinese enterprises into his Office of Business and Economic Development, to the detriment of American companies.
Newsom’s mandate for all-electric cars by 2035 was doubtless groundwork for his bid for the presidency, when he hopes he can bring in Chinese electric cars manufactured by Build Your Dreams (BYD). In 2020, Newsom gave BYD $1 billion to manufacture masks, which the company did not yet make. What happened to the money remains unclear.
In recent years, San Francisco has become an open-air latrine, but in 2023, Gov. Newsom cleaned it up for Xi Jinping’s regal visit. For all but the willfully blind, Newsom is as good as any agent of the PRC in the style of Feinstein and Swalwell.
Newsom should be made to register as an agent of the PRC under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). In the meantime, the Justice Department should prosecute PRC operatives like Wang, and no candidate, voter, or commentator should hesitate to call out Newsom, Swalwell et al. as toadies of the PRC.
If the Communist regime ever did anything with which these Democratic politicians disagreed, it’s hard to know what it might be.
