Leopold Tyrmand

Leopold Tyrmand was Chronicles’ founding editor, leading the publication from 1977 to his death in 1985. A Polish novelist, writer, editor, and jazz singer, Tyrmand was a Polish resistance fighter during World War II and fled to Germany to escape the Holocaust. He returned to Poland to live and struggle out an existence writing under Communist censorship before emigrating to the United States in 1966, writing for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Commentary, and The American Scholar before founding Chronicles of Culture to fight against the encroaching forces of leftism in American culture.
