For the whole weekend I had the (mis)fortune of attending a Continuing Legal Education course at my old law school in order to remain in good standing with the venerable New York state bar.  Now, most of the speakers were older attorneys in the personal injury field.

One of them, whom I’ll call “Seymour Wilkins”, stood out from all those aged ambulance chasers.  Not only did he have a gentlemanly WASP manner, but at the conclusion of his speech he mentioned that he and his late father were always big admirers of Winston Churchill.  Brother Wilkins encouraged us, young and green barristers to use Churchill’s quotes in opening and closing arguments.

His favorite quote was:  “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning”, delivered by the PM in November 1942.  He also mentioned Churchill’s razor-sharp reply to Lady Astor’s “Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison” – “If I were your husband I would take it.”

I wonder if Wilkins and the myriad other Americans who so admire Winston Churchill are aware of his ethno-racial opinions.  This is what Churchill had to say about Jewish communists, whom he called “International Jews”:

“The adherents of this sinister confederacy are mostly men reared up among the unhappy populations of countries where Jews are persecuted on account of their race. Most, if not all, of them have forsaken the faith of their forefathers, and divorced from their minds all spiritual hopes of the next world. This movement among the Jews is not new. From the days of Spartacus-Weishaupt to those of Karl Marx, and down to Trotsky (Russia), Bela Kun (Hungary), Rosa Luxembourg (Germany), and Emma Goldman (United States), this world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality, has been steadily growing.”

Churchill was even more scathing and forthright in his denunciation of the Jews’ role in the Red Terror:

“And the prominent, if not indeed the principal, part in the system of terrorism applied by the [Cheka] has been taken by Jews, and in some notable cases by Jewesses. The same evil prominence was obtained by Jews in the brief period of terror during which Bela Kun ruled in Hungary.”

In addition, Churchill referred to Gandhi as a “seditious fakir” and called Indians “a beastly people with a beastly religion”.

Winston Churchill’s American worshippers conveniently omit the inconvenient views of their idol.  One wonders whether George W. Bush would’ve put Churchill’s bust in the Oval Office if he was aware of the above quotes.
